The typically apolitical pop princess then urged her fans to sign the Equal Rights Initiative petition, which “already has half a million signatures. That is five times what it would need to warrant a response from the White House,” she said as she mimed tapping her watch. “I thank my cast who lives their lives so authentically.”

In between awards presentations, Lizzo just blew up the joint with her rendition of “Good as Hell.” Taking a swig from a bedazzled bottle of Patron, the breakout star bellowed: “Love yourself in a world that doesn’t love you back. You deserve to feel good as hell.” She teared up at the end of her triumphant VMA debut — which took place in front of a massive G-stringed booty-balloon backdrop.

Next up: Billy Ray Cyrus introduced Lil Nas X, who debuted his new single “Panini,” backed by a crew of dancers who looked like they stepped right out of the sci-fi cult classic “Tron.”
